Marchetta McDonald is the epitome of a Southern Belle. Raised in the heart of Dixieland, the Tennessee-native found (at an early age) that fashion came as natural to her as her charming southern twang.

After furnishing homes and adding her signature classic-meets-contemporary style to the interior design industry, Marchetta opted to focus on her true love: fashion. Just last year, Marchetta launched an online boutique which she fittingly dubbed Sugar & Spikes and capitalized on both her killer business sense and a knack for putting together deadly outfits.

Read more about Marchetta and her flare for fashion below.

CL: Tell us a bit about how your background and how it helped you get into your industry.

MM: I have a degree in Interior Design and I have been working in the corporate sector of this field for 5 years. After being pulled around like a puppet, I decided that entrepreneurship was the career path for me. After deep soul searching I went for what I was most passionate about and that is fashion and calling my own shots. I don’t believe anyone can teach you how to dress - either you got it or you don’t, and I feel like I have a keen eye for color, texture, and how to place items together. These aspects are all items that I feel you need to make the business a success and it's how I'm contributing my 2 cents to the fashion industry.

CL: How does your personal style reflect in your work?

MM: I love trends but, most importantly, I love setting trends. Sugar & Spikes is bringing the consumer the trendiest merchandise at an affordable price for the stylish woman. I love blazers and that’s why you see so many on the site; plus it works for all women, the career woman & the stylish woman. You can pair it with jeans and/or a pencil skirt. I like being versatile in my personal style and it shows itself through Sugar & Spikes.

CL: What was the inspiration behind Sugar and Spikes? How is that original idea evolving?

MM: Fashion has been my first love since I was able to try on clothes at a young age and I have always wanted to contribute my ideas to this billion dollar industry, but fear was always my number one reason for not going after my dream. After much brainstorming and consideration, I had to find what makes me happy. The two things that make me happy are being my own boss and fashion, so I mixed the two together and Sugar & Spikes was born.

CL: What should fans of the brand look forward to in the coming months?

MM: I am researching more designers and by the summer we will have a Sugar & Spikes private line designed by yours truly and the Sugar & Spikes team. We are also an advocate for community involvement so we'll be contributing to local charities throughout the year.

CL: Obviously, we love kicks. What are some of the ways chicks can rock their kicks and maintain an air of femininity?

MM: I am feeling high tops in bright colors paired with what I feel the most comfortable in: Dresses & Skirts!!!

CL: Anything else you’d like our readers to know?

MM: I love hearing back from my customers! I believe without them Sugar & Spikes cannot exist so a big shout out to everyone who has supported S|S and I would love to hear feedback on what my Sugar & Spikes Chicks want to see as we move through this journey.
