Nike, after terminating their relationship in March, has renewed it's partnership with Tennis star Maria Sharapova, despite her being issued a two year suspension by the International Tennis Federation for the use of a performance-enhancing substance. As the company explains in a statement:
The ITF Tribunal has found that Maria did not intentionally break its rules… Maria has always made her position clear, has apologized for her mistake and is now appealing the length of the ban… Based on the decision of the ITF and their factual findings, we hope to see Maria back on court and will continue to partner with her.
Back in March, Sharapova’s partnership with Nike was suspended after she failed a drug test. The athlete claimed that she had been using meldonium for health reasons, without realizing that the drug had been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. As of now, the company has not announced concrete plans for a new Sharapova campaign or for her to appear in any new Nike Court marketing projects.
