Last week, adidas and Parley For The Oceans celebrated World Oceans Day with their annual 5K run in New York City. The event, which featured a group of 500 runners, influencers, and other guests for a run of the East River, also got serious about the state of our oceans and, even illicited whispers of an unlikely (but, potentially awesome) partnership.
During the event, Andre Maestrini (adidas Global Head Of Running) and Matthias Amm (Global Category Director Of Running Footwear) discussed the future of footwear innovation, the rise of Boost technology and, most importantly, the need for Earth-conscious manufacturing. While adidas will make good on their promise to release one million pairs of Parley footwear in 2017, the goal in 2018 is more than double with five million pairs of Parley footwear set to hit the streets in 2018. Let's put that in perspective: eleven plastic bottles are recycled to produce one upper, that's 22 plastic bottles recycled per pair; and more, about 55 million plastic bottles transformed into sneakers.
Basically, good earth tings all around.
As their partnership with adidas places them on a global stage, it's only natural that Parley For The Oceans is receiving an increasing number of requests for collaborations. And, while very selective, adidas is open to helping Parley build their partnership roster: even if it means collaborative efforts with the competition.
We are so here for this.
