The weather is chilling, leaves are falling, and we're getting ready for chunky sweaters and sneakerboots.  We're also indulging in a staple of this time of year: ladies and gents, welcome to pumpkin spice season.

Now, for us, while our love of pumpkin spice errything runs deep and true - we're also aware of just how bad all that pumpkin goodness can be for your fitness goals.  Even though a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks every day sounds appealing, it's all fun and games until your jeans don't fit anymore.

That said, with some help from Eating Bird Food, Dashing Dish, and PopSugar Fitness (as well as Britt's keen nutrition eye) we've put together a few healthier recipes to itch that seasonal craving.

Healthy-ish Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte

Nothing signifies the beginning of fall quite like a pumpkin spice latte. But, like I said before, that sugary Starbucks goodness will not be your friend when it comes time to slip into that holiday dress. Opt instead for this healthy-ish version courtesy of Eating Bird Food.

Pumpkin Spice "Cheesecake" Mousse

I think it's pretty safe to say that this picture speaks for itself.  And, while this decadent dessert may look hella rich, the saturated fat is significantly reduced thanks to the option to use plain greek yogurt in the base.  Our tip: while the Dashing Dish recipe calls for whipped cottage cheese and a milk of your choice, opt for the healthier option and stick with greek yogurt and nut milk (almond, cashew, or coconut).

Pumpkin Spice Smoothie

If you're familiar with Britt's website, you'll know that she's HUGE on smoothies.  Since she's the smoothie Queen, you know we had to find something that met her smoothie criteria.  If you're craving pumpkin spice, but watching your grain intake, try this pumpkin spice smoothie. This frozen goodie is part "milk"shake, part ice cream (thanks to the banana), and a whole lot of protein packed in a powerful serving. Bottoms up.

Pumpkin Spice Caipirinha Cocktail

Utilizing staple fall ingredients like ginger and nutmeg, this Pumpkin Caipirinha is the treat to get that fall buzz.  Best of all, it's not weighed down with sugary juices or refined sugars. BUT, as always, everything in moderation.  Try to keep yourself from drinking an entire pitcher.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 lime, cut into 4 pieces
1/2 ounce agave nectar
1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger (can substitute with 1/2 ounce homemade ginger simple syrupor 1/2 ounce ginger liqueur)
1 1/2 ounces cachaca
1 1/2 ounces pumpkin puree
Ice

For garnish:
Nutmeg
Lime wheel

DIRECTIONS

  1. Muddle the lime, agave nectar, and fresh ginger in the bottom of a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add cachaca, pumpkin puree, and ice. Shake until thoroughly mixed and chilled. Strain into a glass filled with ice, and garnish with grated nutmeg and a lime wheel.
