Nike’s Air Max 1 is a sneaker you can never have too many of. The classic shoe is super versatile and always looks great. Tinker Hatfield’s first foray into the exposed air unit in the late 80s was inspired by Centre Pompidou in Paris. The building design, controversial at the time, incorporated pipes and mechanical systems on the exterior. This inside-out style is now the inspiration for a new set of Air Max 1 to honor the Parisian museum. The Air Max pack, ‘By Day, By Night,’ features two new iterations of the AM1 that are works of art.

Before settling on the minimalistic dream that is the ‘By Day, By Night’ pack, the designers experimented with everything from full color-blocking to pipes on every panel. The simplistic design proved to be the best and I definitely agree. The ‘By Day’ pair features a white leather base with colorful lines contouring the sneaker. Hits of University Red and Royal Blue are seen on the swoosh and exposed air unit. The ‘By Night’ pair, inspired by how the building glimmers at night, incorporates shades of grey on the leather upper. Silver and black detailing are seen on this version. Both pairs are completed with tonal laces and a translucent outsole. The outsole features more colorful pipe motifs and a special logo with 3 P’s that stand for Paris, Pompidou, and pipes.
