The Nike Chinese New Year 2021 Collection | Release Information
Chinese New Year celebrations begin next month and this is the year of the Ox. The Swoosh knows that celebrations with such a rich history are deserving of collections that encapsulate just that. Here, we’re taking a look at an extensive drop from Nike that is inspired by a joyous temple fair and shows off a full range of creative expression.
The Nike Chinese New Year 2021 Collection is specifically organized into three design themes: the explosive firecracker, the artisanal Chinese knot and the naturalistic spring blossom. With both apparel and footwear options, theres sure to be something for everyone. The firecracker inspiration takes form through a Dunk and Dunk disrupt which feature warning label prints and fuse-styles laces, an Air Jordan V Low and Air Jordan XXXV with wear-away uppers, a Chuck 70 option in a fiery orange hue, a hoodie that resemble warning labels on firecrackers, and a women’s dress that is inspired by traditional Chinese costume.
The Chinese knot is a symbol of longevity, eternity, and good luck. It serves as a way to convey unity and is seen sprinkled throughout the collection. Key Nike silhouettes such as the Kyrie 7, SuperRep 2, Air Max 2090, and Blazer Mid ‘77 feature this laced, woven detailing. The woven-inspired pattern is also seen in a Kyrie varsity jacket, hoodies, crewnecks and a special Liverpool FC kit. A Chuck 70 also pays homage to Chinese knot-making through an embossed graphic on the patent leather metallic red and black upper. Most notable is an Air Jordan 1 Low with an upper adorned in a repeat Jacquard pattern with foil accents and a removable embroidered red knot bracelet with a gold pendant for good luck.
The final round of products from the collection are inspired by florals that signal the beginning of the spring season and the start of new beginnings. A new women’s running silhouette, the Escape Run, features soft pink textures that emulate a variety of flowers which serve as omens of good luck ahead of the lunar New Year. A pink Blazer Mid Rebel with a tear-away upper and a SuperRep Groove with flowery pastels are also paying homage to the rebirth associated with spring. A Jordan Delta Breathe features a UV-activated lateral Swoosh and floral upper while a final Chuck 70 iteration reflects the celebratory spirit of recreation with a pattern inspired by Chinese patchwork.
