The Converse x Denim Tears Sneaker Collaboration Releases Tomorrow

This is about much more than sneakers. This is about the Converse Chuck 70 featuring the African-American flag for the first time. More importantly, it’s about the collaboration with LA-based streetwear designer Tremaine Emory (AKA Denim Tears) and how he merges his own experiences into a powerful message on canvas. Traditionally, the Converse sneaker could be seen as a symbol of American culture, but to see the celebration of the red, black, and green flag colorway is a reminder of the representation that is so important to our Black community.
Tremaine Emory grew up near Jamaica Queens and through his lens, the African-American flag invokes a sense of personal discovery through Black artists’ creative expression that is meant to be celebrated. The Converse x Denim Tears collection features a Chuck 70 High and Low iteration with black and red stripes on the canvas upper. The green tongue ties in all the colors of the African-American flag with signature co-branding throughout, and all paying homage to an evolution of Marcus Garvey’s Pan-African flag.
We came across a powerful message penned on Instagram that eloquently described the feelings of so many watching brands through this era of fighting social injustices and racism. It spoke to the fact that even though millions of dollars were donated and messages were posted, the real impact happens when brands take it a step further. When brands like Converse provide the full creative control and global platform to Black creatives, it can create such a powerful ripple in this space and beyond.
In an effort to push the message of civic engagement, the collection also ties in campaign partners For Freedoms and James Whitner’s The Whitaker Group.
