A Look Inside Emily Oberg’s Sporty & Rich No.3
The third issue of Sporty and Rich is hot off the press, so let’s chat about it! If you’re not familiar, Sporty and Rich is the brain child of sneakHER cool girl, Emily Oberg. You may have heard of her from her previous gigs with Complex and her stint as the Creative Director for Kith Women. The streetwear queen launched her brand in 2015, telling Fader in an interview that it “started as a way of describing my aesthetic.” The brand is a blend of sportswear and high fashion that creates a beautiful balance between the two worlds. But don’t think you have to be rich to be a Sporty and Rich girl, Emily further explains “I mean rich in quality—I'm really into well-made things. And rich in your life, in happiness and health.” Back in 2015, Sporty and Rich was mostly beautiful imagery and a collection of staple merch. The brand quickly expanded into print, launching the first issue of Sporty and Rich Magazine in 2016.
While Oberg is popularly labeled an influencer, I think lifestyle guru may be more fitting. Sporty and Rich definitely attests to this, as the magazine gives you a peak into the wonderful world of design in all aspects. The brand highlights interior design, graphic design and photography in addition to fashion.
It’s important to let you know that Emily Oberg acts as the Editor and Designer for these publications. This is such an inspiring feat. In an interview with Hypebae, Emily noted “there is not a lot of female-driven content in streetwear, and I think it’s important that there is something out there for girls who are into sneakers and rap music.”
The third issue of Sporty and Rich was released this past May and doesn’t disappoint. This time, the little over 180-page magazine features everything from poster design, to Barbie Sport and vintage F1 racing gear. One of the most interesting pieces for me was “Memory and Future.” This editorial covered the design work of Ricardo Bofill, a Spanish architect that I probably wouldn’t have known if not for this piece. The magazine rounds out with an absolutely dreamy photo spread named “AIR.” The spread features an assortment of vintage Nike trainers, including a pair of 1992 Nike Air Max Tailwind.
In a recent interview with Ssense, she stated that these magazines take her the full year to complete and the finished product proves this. If you’re looking for an enjoyable read or a new coffee table book, I definitely recommend.
Congrats to Emily Oberg on another successful release of Sporty and Rich Magazine!
