Nike's New Swoosh Fly Collection Puts Women Front and Center

Female athletes have not had the same respect or benefits as their male counterparts. They have been underpaid, underrepresented, and have not been given the same recognition as male athletes within their respective sport. This inequality has been felt down to the clothing female athletes wear. In other words, clothing that is flat out not made for the female body. Now, Nike has taken a step in the right direction by introducing a new collection that is made specifically for the female basketball player both on and off the court.
The Nike Swoosh Fly Collection features a range of basketball shirts, shorts, jerseys, warm up pants, pull over hoodies, and full zip hoodies. The range of eight pieces encompasses all hours of a player’s life and include soft fabrics for casual pieces that can be worn on and off the court. Aside from the varying silhouette options and comfortable fabrics, the details within this collection hone in on the needs of the female athlete. That is to say, this collection takes standard issue basketball gear and redesigned it with the female body in mind. Basketball shorts that were often too narrow for the thighs were widened and given a high rise and tighter waistband. Slender dimensions were incorporated in the shirts, jerseys, and hoodies in the collection for a truer fit. For example, the Swoosh Fly penny jersey features a narrower, less boxy shoulder width so that the jersey straps don’t slide around during play. The Swoosh Fly hoodies are designed with a larger hood in order to fit hair buns and ponytails.
