When it comes to combining contemporary art with political subjects, there’s only a certain kind of artist who can get both the message of the issue and illustrate it in such an artistic way that people want to buy it for personal collections or feature it in museums. One of those artists who gets it right consistently is contemporary artist, Nina Chanel Abney. Her work is known for her combination of representation, abstraction, and culture that involves race, celebrity, religion, politics, sex, and art history. She uses symbols and bright colors to not only draw her audience into having serious conversations about what’s going on in the world around us but shows her audience who she is as an artist and what she deals with on a personal level as well. For her newest art collection and collaboration, she’s teamed up with Jordan Brand and is taking us back to the city to which she and MJ both have ties.
Nina Chanel Abney was born in Chicago, IL, and it’s only right that she takes us back through her childhood memories, revisits old basketball courts, and celebrates art, basketball, and family with her new Jordan Brand capsule collection. In this 11-piece capsule, you’ll find her designs in an assortment of apparel and fashion accessories, as well as her spin on the AJ2. The most notable piece out of the collection is the hoodie, which comes in two colorways, that features the iconic picture of Michael Jordan holding the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy in 1991. Abney also incorporates MJ’s baseball career with a reversible baseball jersey with one side celebrating his 3-peat championship win, and the other giving us all of our throwback varsity jerseys feels with the number “45”. Other pieces include a funnel neck top, a matching tracksuit jacket and pants, a sports bra, a t-shirt, socks, and a snapback hat rounding off the entire collection. The color scheme of the entire collection stays within black, red, and green, acknowledging the Pan-African flag.

Nina Chanel took to her Instagram account to let us know the raffle for the collection will be open from Tuesday, July 5th @ 11am est/8am pst, and will end on Wednesday, July 6th @ 12am midnight est/9pm pst. Winners will be contacted via email on Thursday, July 7th, and the entire collection will drop Friday, July 8th. Click the link below to enter into the draw now and to see the full collection pieces.
