Chance The Rapper Channeled Chicago Artist Mía Lee for His Latest Cover Art— And Now, There's Official Merch
Underneath the buzzy rap albums that took over 2022’s airwaves— releases from Pusha T, Kendrick, and Flo Milli, just to recall a few— Chance the Rapper has been brewing something special. Chance the Rapper’s upcoming 2023 album, Star Line Gallery, directly references Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey’s “Back-to-Africa” movement of the early 1900s— the largest mass movement in African American history. And ahead of its release comes “YAH Know,” an energetic and soulful single inspired by Chance and fellow rapper Vic Mensa’s recent travels to Ghana as well as deep explorations of his family’s lineage.
Chance collaborated with Chicago-born visual artist and designer Mía Lee for the “YAH Know” artwork. Mía’s signature nostalgic cartoon style shines in this acrylic and plaster piece, which was displayed in a special exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. The single and its artwork both capture generations upon generations of the black experience. In the artwork, a black woman and man stand alongside each other in colorful ensembles, standing in front of a burning car. The fiery background represents the harsh circumstances that black individuals are faced with and forced to overcome.
In celebration of the MOCA exhibition, Chance and Mía are releasing three apparel pieces featuring the “YAH Know” artwork on the front. A black long sleeve tee, crewneck pullover, and hoodie, available in sizes small-2XL, have been released over on Chance’s official merch site, Chance Stuff. The merch drop precede’s Chance’s upcoming Black Star Line Festival, a one-day music festival in Ghana that’s free to all attendees. The stacked lineup features big names like Erykah Badu, T-Pain, and Toby Nwigwe.
