Nike Releases New Period Protection Shorts

Don’t get me wrong, we love a good workout, but periods make it difficult to get one in without feeling overwhelmingly self-conscious. Even with safeguards in place, like a pad or tampon, there’s still a constant urge to “check yourself” and make sure you don't bleed through. Knowing this, Nike created its first-ever menstruation product, Leak Protection: Period, an ultrathin, absorbent liner that helps protect against period leaks.
Made of a two-layer laminate gusset that absorbs, wicks, and holds blood, Leak Protection: Period will debut in a fan favorite, the Nike One Short silhouette (and for players in this year’s Women’s World Cup, the Nike Pro Short) . With a 7-inch inseam, invisible built-in brief, and flexible, body-contouring fabric, the design provides extra comfort and support, so girls and women can continue doing what they enjoy — playing sports or working out — with peace of mind. While you will still need to wear a pad, tampon, or cup, with more than 30 prototypes created and tested by Nike designers, this iteration of the Nike One Short is period gear we can rely on.
In speaking about the design, Lisa Gibson, senior apparel innovation project manager for Nike’s Advanced Innovation group, said:
“Fear of bleed-through is real — and not just through the teen years, but through the entire journey of menstruation. Nike Leak Protection: Period is for people with periods across all life stages, designed to give them an added layer of confidence so they can feel secure during all forms of sport and movement. It’s an innovation that we believe will change people’s lives.”
Though built-in period underwear is not a new concept, by adding this product to its lineup, Nike is helping women remain active during menstruation.
