New Book "She Kicks" Heralds Female Disruptors in Sneaker Culture
For the first time in herstory (HOW?!?), we finally have a book dedicated to the women who disrupted the male-dominated spaces in sneaker culture, creating a footwear landscape all of their own. She Kicks: Female Disruptors in the Sneaker World launched under NYC-based publisher Studio 96 earlier this December, kicking up tons of social media attention in the process for being the first book of its kind.
Journalist Nav Gill (HypeBae, NYLON) and Girl On Kicks founder Sanna Poeze collaborated on the book, pulling from their years of experience in the industry to guide their research. This glossy coffee table read features large-scale images of the most beloved women’s releases to ever grace our closets, along with detailed stories of how they came to be. Alongside high-res imagery of the women’s designs that changed the sneaker game for good, quotes from sneaker culture disruptors like designer Aleali May, athlete and Saysh footwear founder Allyson Felix, and Puma’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion head Michelle Marshall earn their own pages in the book.
"There are so many great books surrounding sneaker culture and the industry out there, but most of them just entirely overlook the contributions of women," Gill previously told HighSnobiety. "This is the first-ever book about women in sneaker culture and the industry through a female lens, and I still can’t believe that when I think about it,"
