This SneakHER Closet Is All About Variety...and Lots of Pink

No Ordinary Love.

We took our talents to Denmark to go inside the collection of Amalie Foss Ringgaard. From stacks on stacks to her personal penchant for pink, this sneaker closet is anything but ordinary.

Of all the ways one can use Instagram—to glean style inspiration, as a mode of personal expression, to catch up on news without actually watching the news—one of our favorites is to discover creative sneaker collectors that we otherwise may never have “met.” Some time last year, along with thousands of other fashion- and sneaker-enthused individuals, we scrolled across Amalie Foss’ account, which prominently features her love for sneakers in a way that appeals both to the seasoned collector and to the girl who will (and can) find a way to wear dresses with everything.

Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, Foss studies film and media production and knows a thing or two about finding her best light. Upon one look at her natural light filled home we instantly realized something: We have a thing for European collectors. What can we say? Their closets, full of bright colors, clean silhouettes, and (it seems) not one shadow ever, are like catnip for us. But, Foss’ collection (while still packed full of Swoosh love) is one where variety reigns supreme. From Nike to New Balance, Amalie doesn’t seem to favor one brand in particular. In fact, her only real prerequisite for copping a pair is for color itself. Better yet, pink: “It’s no secret I love colors, especially pink. I have too many pink shoes and I try to not choose the pink ones now.” Oh, and to avoid the same model, same functionality bore —we totally feel you, Amalie.

While ogling over the collection she's amassed, we chatted with Foss about her first collection moment (hello, Huarache), her absolute love for variety, and the most horrible question we could ever ask her.

AMALIE, IN A NUTSHELL…

“I’m Amalie, 23 years old and based in Copenhagen, Denmark. I study film- and media production and I enjoy playing with aesthetics that has a female focus and sneakers and streetwear.

Sneakers are generally a big deal in Denmark. It really began to take off in my high-school years, where I started caring more for specific models and getting them in a color no one else had.”

IT ALL STARTED WITH A TINKER CLASSIC…

The Nike Air Huarache (all white) was the one that really kicked it off for me. I think it was in 2011. They were super hyped and I got them on eBay. It was such an amazing feeling wearing such a limited sneaker and I got so many compliments. They just went with everything and I completely wore them down. After that I just started collecting more, doing more research, exploring the community, engaging in conversations with people who shared the same love for sneakers. It’s been a very ‘natural path’ to where I am today.

PERFECT CLOSET 101: KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN.

“ A closet full of the same model, color or functionality is too boring for me. I like to have options. I love when a new sneaker can add new possibilities of styling and functionality. I am actually quite practical about my sneakers. I try not to buy too much of the same and in good/functional materials.

I have a rule that whenever I see a sneaker made in all leather I like (which is not too often) I have to buy it - because those are the ones I wear the most. Great for parties, rain, snow, keeping warm etc. just give them a wipe and they’re good as new.”

PINK. NO SHRINK.

“It’s hard to describe, but for me I just know [what I like] when I see it. I’m immediately intrigued by the silhouette, colorway, or details. I usually gravitate more to Nike silhouettes but have no preference and I’m generally open to different brands and silhouettes. But, it’s no secret that I love colors, especially pink. I have too many pink shoes and I try to not choose the pink ones now. LOL!”

PASSION, PURPOSE, AND SNEAKHER STYLE

“I’ve always been quite a mix. I love streetwear and sneakers but also glam, colors and extravagant dresses. I’m very passionate about visuals, colors, fashion and aesthetics. A sneaker (or the right sneaker that is) is a work of art. [I love] the details, colors, and history or purpose. And [I love] how the sneaker community never stops creating new and fresh content around products. This shapes me as I study film and media and overall inspires me.”

WAFFLE POWER

“At the moment I’m all about the Nike Sacai Waffle. To me they are perfect. They are edgy, street, fashion but also fun - all in one. I have the blue pair for fun, and the white/grey pair for when I need my sneakers to tone down a crazy outfit.”

Q: IF YOU HAD TO GIVE AWAY ALL YOUR SHOES EXCEPT ONE, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU KEEP?

“What a horrible question! LOL! Worst case scenario. At the moment the Nike Sacai Waffles. But, I would truly miss my Yeezy 700, Yeezy Calabasas, Air Forces, and Zoom Fly SP.”

SNEAKHER CULTURE = MOVING THE NEEDLE

“Sneakers have for a long time been a male dominated field. But I think currently there’s so many great things going on for women. More limited models to us and girls like Aleali May, Mini Swoosh and Danielle Cathari killing it. Hypebae and you guys at CNK Daily making sneaker/streetwear related news and content which is so important! Sneakers are now just as cool with a dress as with sweats - and I love where it’s going.”
