Nike is no stranger to eco-conscious initiatives. From sustainable footwear campaigns to full-blown apparel collections made of recycled materials, Nike has been taking a nice, hard look at their role as a contributor to textile waste and pollution. Nike Grind, Nike Refurbished, and Nike Donation + Recycling make up a family of swoosh initiatives to combat unnecessary waste, helping the brand move closer to their goal of a circular future.

Unveiled just last month, the Nike Re-Creation Program is the big swoosh’s latest sustainability effort. The program promotes the brand’s circular business vision by transforming locally-collected vintage and dead stock clothing items into fresh pieces. The apparel pieces are wholly one-of-a-kind, each one featuring a different combination of unique dye splatters, colorful stitching, and sewn-in patches.

The program held its first chapter on May 26 in Los Angeles at The Grove, a bustling retail and entertainment hub seated atop the historical LA Farmer’s Market. Nike execs like Chief Design Officer John Hoke believe that Nike Re-Creation is another step in the right direction for the company’s zero-waste ambition.

“Nike Re-Creation highlights an exciting moment of experimentation and progression,” says John Hoke, a Chief Design Officer at Nike. “The program exemplifies Nike’s collaborative spirit, bringing together experts in design, retail, supply chain and sustainability to strategize and learn.”
