Adidas and Kate Moss Are Totally Making the Gazelle Happen
The storied success of the Adidas Stan Smith has been going strong since fashionistas and celebs everywhere started stepping foot in them on regular occasion a few years ago. And thanks to the likes of Pharrell, Rita Ora, and Stan himself, the simple style reigns supreme as a fashion week staple and overall wish list worthy sneaker option for women. But now, Adidas is betting on another old school item, the Gazelle, to catapult itself to must-cop status. Reissued in May and officially on the market this month in 12 bright suede colorways, the sports sneaker from the 1960's is similar in silhouette and as understated in style as the Stan Smith.
So, how will adidas charm the same fashion-conscious crowd that found joy with the Stan Smith? With one of fashion's biggest icons, of course. Enter Kate Moss. For its Gazelle campaign, the brand has restored a photo from 1993 shot by Denzil McNeelance of young Moss wearing Gazelles. "Like the Gazelle, Kate Moss is just as relevant in 2016 as she was back in the 1990s, which is why the image works so well," Adidas brand consultant and curator Gary Aspden said in an interview with Business of Fashion.
Artist Doug Abraham, also known as bessnyc4 on Instagram, was hired by Three Stripes to revamp and modernize Moss's throwback photo. You can see his work in the video above. While the imagery is awesome, we won't know the Gazelle's real appeal until we spy the street style from NY Fashion Week this September.
