Nike Air Zoom Alphafly "Next Nature" | First Look
Nike has gotten serious about their sustainability initiatives.
Last fall, Nike launched their Move to Zero campaign, a journey to eradicating non-sustainable business practices from the company. Their goal is to protect the “Future of Sport” by powering all Nike facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2025 and reduce their carbon footprint by 30% before 2030. They have also begun to divert up to 99% of Nike footwear manufacturing waste from landfills and retrieve nearly 1 billion plastic bottles a year to use in their plastic yarn.
“We don’t want to be about making shiny objects,” says Senior Footwear Product Designer Rachel Bull about launching sustainable Nike footwear. “We wanted to set our concept car as the intent for how we think about performance and sustainability. Putting a sustainable focus on our fastest marathon shoe also means we need all hands on deck for it to work, from our teams in design to material sourcing to manufacturing.”
The photo campaign for these new performance sneakHERs mirrors the eco-conscious direction of the Move to Zero campaign. The shoot shows the Air Zoom Fly “Next Nature” in front of and on top of flowers, grass, and trash. This shoe is made up of roughly 50% recycled materials by weight, the most of any Nike performance shoe. The Flyknit fiber uppers are made of water bottles that were headed for landfills. Recycled yarn, foam, and carbon fiber make up the rest of the sneaker. The diversity of materials used allowed Nike to slash the waste created during upper construction by 60%. Purple-pink, bright orange, cool-toned gray, black, and cream make up the colorway for these Alphaflys.
