Macy's Delivers Stage-Ready Dresses for Black Sororities

Personal experience is valuable when it comes to problem-solving in fashion. Boardroom meetings mean nothing if the people in the room haven’t walked a mile in the shoes of the consumer. One Macy’s buyer masterminded a new line of formal attire that tackles sorority-shopping woes; and believe us, she’s walked the walk.

The new collection represents the black sororities of The Divine Nine, the nine historically Black Greek letter organizations within the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, Delta Sigma Theta, and Sigma Gamma Rho are honored in this new collection, with pieces donning their respective colors. Thought up and directed by a Zeta, this line solves the age-old problem of not having something to wear to a formal event. Finding a dress that’s both stylish AND professional can feel impossible.

We come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and curves, and I understand the challenges we face when shopping.

WyQuasia King-Thomas, 32-year-old director and buyer of day dresses at Macy’s, says the inspiration for the line came from her college days as a member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority. Countless greek life banquets and philanthropic events left WyQuasia rummaging through her closet, struggling to find a dress to wear. With the new Macy’s line, WyQuasia wants to provide well-fitting, appropriate dress options for fellow black women that she couldn’t find for herself while in college.

“We come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and curves, and I understand the challenges we face when shopping,” says King-Thomas in this Bloomberg interview. “I know the need and the importance of this dress collection.”

Available in a variety of different shape-defining silhouettes, this collection is full of modest yet flattering dresses fit for a sorority conference. Each sorority gets at least 5 pieces dedicated to them in the collection, and there’s plans in the works to release a line of women’s suits in June.
